Michigan boy Hunter Callender suffers horrific injuries after being mauled by pit bulls

A 5-year-old boy in Michigan was brutally mauled by two dogs last week and suffered serious facial injuries that required extensive reconstructive surgery.

Little Hunter Callender was playing with his younger sister outside his grandmother’s home in Grand Rapids on May 12 when two pit bulls jumped out of a neighbor’s car and pounced on him, according to a GoFundMe page set up for the family.

The dog attack left Callender with multiple broken bones and lacerations to his face, neck, and head.

The boy’s mother, Ashley White, told WZZM-TV that her son has been struggling since the abuse.

“He was pretty depressed. He’s pretty traumatized from the whole event,” White said. “He doesn’t know what to think. I mean, he’s only 5 and that’s quite an event.”

Callender’s jawbone, cheekbone, and eye socket were all broken, and his right eye sees double from the damage. Doctors also said the break in his jawbone is so bad that some of his adult teeth won’t develop properly, according to GoFundMe.

The youngster has had multiple surgeries, including a five-hour reconstructive operation that saw plates and screws implanted in his face. Next, the little boy’s jaw needs to be wired up and a feeding tube inserted to allow the bones to heal.

The boy’s father said in an interview with local newspaper The Daily News that his recovery will likely be lifelong as he will need further surgeries as his bones grow.

“We are only at the beginning of his long journey,” said Andrew Callender. “We want people to realize how serious this can be and how much suffering our son will suffer in the years to come.”

A family friend set up a GoFundMe page to help Callender’s parents cover his medical expenses. The fundraiser has received more than $13,000 in donations as of Thursday.

The two pit bulls who abused the five-year-old have been euthanized and their owner will be prosecuted for failing to control a dangerous animal, according to The Daily News.
