Michelle Obama tells Stephen Colbert how her family survived lockdown

The former First Family was no stranger to being incarcerated.

Former first lady Michelle Obama guested on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic to promote her new book The Light We Carry.

Michelle called the book “a little Covid project” filled with tools and methods she used to overcome the world’s uncertainty during lockdown.

“My goal is to start a conversation through this book,” explained Michelle. “We need to reconnect”

All the lockdown talk prompted the Late Show host to ask how the Obamas have been dealing with their time in isolation.

“You know, the interesting thing is Barack and I probably did better in lockdown than most because we lived in lockdown for eight years.”

The 58-year-old former first lady revealed that the family has always lived in a lockdown-like environment during Obama’s presidency.

“You literally can’t even go for a walk outside without notifying someone. Your footprint is smaller than you imagine,” she explained to Colbert.

The Chicago native explained that due to the limitations that came with her husband’s job, she already had techniques to “stay sane” and “keep moving.”

But when her girls came home from college, “it was a whole different thing,” Michelle explains.

The former first lady said it’s nice to have her daughters Malia and Sasha back from college.

Michelle was amazed that her daughters were able to continue their schooling through Zoom.

“If I were her, I’d probably cut or turn off the audio.”

The Chicago native went on to explain that before the lockdown went into effect, she made sure her home was well stocked with games, art supplies and sewing needles. Anything to keep them busy during the uncertain times the world was going through.

Colbert then asked her what she has been doing to keep herself occupied during the lockdown.

“I was knitting,” Michelle announced excitedly.

Nights during the dog days of lockdown at the Obama house included things like games of spades and art contests with paintings that every member of the family would work on.

The Late Show host concluded by asking the former first lady who had the best painting.

“Mine,” Michelle replied with a smile.
