The Premier League’s harsh winter schedule has begun and Michael Owen has his eye on a series of intriguing midweek fixtures, with West Hamtrip of the top four competitors Arsenal assumed to be the group’s choice.

The Hammers have had a stellar start to the campaign but have struggled to replicate their early-season form towards the end of the season, winning just one of their last five games in the top flight.

David Moyes‘the men were held to a disappointing goalless draw against lowly Burnley in their final game and face an Arsenal team that can be brimming with confidence following an all-out 3-0 win over Southampton.

The Gunner is sixth in the table when it stands, but can go ahead Manchester United and West Ham into fourth place with Wednesday’s much-anticipated London derby win at the Emirates.

Ralf Rangnick’s Reds were set to start this week’s action against Brentford on Tuesday night, but The match was postponed after Covid-19 broke out in the visitor’s camp. The game will be rescheduled in due course.

Elsewhere, League leaders Manchester City host Leeds, second-placed Liverpool host Newcastle and Chelsea host Rafa Benitez’s struggling team Everton.

In his BetVictor columnist, former England striker Owen previewed the upcoming midweek action and made his predictions for all nine matches that will take place around the country.

Norwich vs. Aston Villa

Michael Owen’s prediction: Norwich 0-1 Aston Villa

Norwich have played well in the matches against Man United. It’s also an old story for them, despite not putting the ball in the net. They had a few chances, but they never got the final pass correct. Arguably the lowest scorers in the league, they desperately need to start scoring more.

It was obviously very strange to see Steven Gerrard in front of the visitors at Anfield and although his side played well they didn’t really threaten Liverpool. However, I think they were a bit unlucky with a few decisions that didn’t go their way.

Norwich need points and will aim for them here, especially when Dean Smith faces his old side. I think Villa will come close to this, 1-0.

Manchester City vs. Leeds

Michael Owen’s prediction: Manchester City 4-1 Leeds

City didn’t pull off a win as they usually do, but it was an important win over Wolves on Saturday. It was never easy playing against a very well organized team, but they did enough to win. I expected a more open game here.

Leeds will feel very sorry to leave Stamford Bridge with nothing. They did enough to get at least one point from that game. However, they played some good things into the game and the second goal was a typical Leeds goal.

There must be a goal in this one. Leeds are never the type to just sit and eat, they will try and attack. That would suit Man City here and I can see them winning this game by a few goals.

Brighton vs. Wolves

Michael Owen’s prediction: Brighton 1-1 Wolves

Brighton come into this match as their Spurs fixture has been postponed. I hope they will achieve this, but they have to go up against a tough opponent.

Wolves did not score many goals, only Norwich scored less, but their defense was excellent. Only the top three teams have conceded less than them and they looked very organized at the Etihad on Saturday. It’s impressive to stick around for so long with ten men.

This looks like a draw to me; I’ll draw 1-1.

Burnley vs. Watford

Michael Owen’s prediction: Burnley 1-0 Watford

It was another draw for Burnley at the weekend, which was four of their last five games. That’s a good point though against a strong West Ham side and Burnley could even take the lead. If they keep playing like that, I’m sure the results will come.

Claudio Ranieri must have been heartbroken when he lost to Brentford on Friday. It was like a missed opportunity, especially given the lead in the game.

This is a big game. A win for Burnley and they got past Watford and out of the bottom three. I say it all the time, but I always trust Sean Dyche’s side in these big games and I can see Burnley come close to going 1-0 up.

Crystal Palace vs. Southampton

Michael Owen’s prediction: Crystal Palace 2-1 Southampton

I think Palace were excellent against Everton. They kept the ball well and always controlled the game. He’s been talked about a lot, but Connor Gallagher continues to grow from strength to strength and he’s developing into a very good player.

Pressure is growing on Southampton and Ralph Hasenhuttl. It was a lousy performance at the Emirates in the loss to Arsenal and they are getting closer to the relegation zone.

A win for Palace would give both sides plenty of space and I can see them taking the win, 2-1 Crystal Palace.

Arsenal vs. West Ham

Michael Owen’s prediction: Arsenal 1-1 West Ham

This will be a great game. I never knew what to expect at Arsenal. They played poorly to Goodison last Monday and then went on to win against Southampton. However, this is a great opportunity for them, a win here that will put them ahead of The Hammers.

The trips to Burnley have never been easy, but David Moyes will still be disappointed when he only gets one point. West Ham are still in 4th place, but the chasing package is gradually turning towards them.

West Ham will try not to lose this game and will try to keep things tight. I can see them letting Arsenal down and taking a point here.

Leicester vs. Tottenham

Michael Owen’s prediction: Leicester 1-2 Tottenham

Leicester’s 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle was perhaps their best performance of the season. They move the ball very well and some of their shots are excellent. If they can keep going, they’ll start climbing the table.

Spurs now have two games against all of their opponents, which might not be such a bad thing. Conte will have more time on the training ground with his team and I hope to see them well trained here.

I’m going to Spurs. They have shown signs of progress under Conte, and this will be a win.

Chelsea vs. Everton

Michael Owen’s prediction: Chelsea 3-1 Everton

It wasn’t a stellar performance, but Chelsea did enough to win against Leeds on Saturday. However, they did not play well at this minute and defensive form should be a concern for Thomas Tuchel.

The mood around Everton is not good at all. I thought the win against Arsenal last Monday could be a springboard for the club but it was a really poor performance against Crystal Palace. The pressure is on Rafa Benitez right now.

Things are not going to get better here for Rafa against one of his old teams. Chelsea’s defense conceded surprisingly well, but I think they got a couple of goals for themselves, 3-1 Chelsea.

Liverpool vs. Newcastle

Michael Owen’s prediction: Liverpool 3-1 Newcastle

Villa let Liverpool down for a long time at Anfield, but it was the victory that mattered. They’re really building a new wave and they’re sure to keep an eye on a few targets here.

After that big win against Burnley, I think Newcastle took the corner. They do not have. It was a disaster against Leicester and their defense was shocking. Eddie Howe will be in dire need of January and hopefully a few more players.

I can only see this going one way, 3-1 Liverpool.
