Mexico’s AMLO announces Biden will visit the country in early 2023

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Friday that President Biden will visit the country early next year.

López Obrador announced during a press conference that Biden will travel to Mexico City for the summit of North American leaders on January 9-10. It would be the 80-year-old commander-in-chief’s first trip to Mexico as president.

The Mexican leader added that the summit will likely include a trilateral meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Biden.

In June, López Obrador boycotted the Americas Summit in Los Angeles over the Biden administration’s refusal to invite leaders from Cuba and Nicaragua, as well as officials from Venezuela.

But the following month, López Obrador visited the White House for talks with Biden amid tensions over immigration and fentanyl.

The White House did not immediately respond to the Post’s request for comment.

The trip would come amid a wave of largely uncontrolled immigration into the US across the southern border.

In the 12 months ended September 30, around 2.4 million border crossings were recorded at the southern border, the highest on record. Many of the migrants come from Central and South America.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy called on Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas during a visit to the Texas-Mexico border on Tuesday to resign over the crisis at the border.

The summit of North American leaders was previously scheduled for December.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre noted in October that the president’s plans for the summit were still undecided.

“We are still working on plans for the next North Americans Leaders’ Summit and have no travel announcements to make at this time,” Jean-Pierre said last month.
