Mets Keep Winning feat. Dwight Gooden

Met's Alonso

No aces, no problems.

If you’re trying to win blackjack, that’s a problem. If you’re trying to stay in first place in NL East, that hasn’t been a problem for the Mets. Well, at least for now. They waived Jacob deGrom for the first two months of the season. They will have to be without their other ace, Max Scherzer, at least until the All-Star break. But here they are, eight games ahead of the Phillies in the division.

To talk about the Mets’ fight against adversity and another series win over the weekend in Colorado, we bring you a new episode of the podcast “Amazin’ But True” with Nelson Figueroa and I. A good friend of the program and Mets legend Dwight Gooden joins us for the second half of the show.

‘Amazin’ But True’ Podcast with Jake & Figgie:

  • ANOTHER SERIES WIN: Happy Birthday Buck Showalter! Happy Belated Birthday Figgie! Mets take two out of three against the Rockies in Colorado. Mets play basic baseball and drive in runs without the home run. Pitching was great. Edwin Diaz continues to do the work.
  • MAX. SCHERZER INJURY/METS RESISTANCE: Scherzer will be out until at least July. Time will tell when he returns, but the Mets will take it easy with the angled injury so he’s healthy for the playoff run. Starling Marte hits a home run on the first pitch, which he sees coming off the bereavement list after the death of his grandmother. The Mets continue to show their resilience.
  • BASSITT/ESCOBAR: Chris Bassitt finally gets a deal through arbitration. Scherzer proves again why he’s a leader after delivering a speech for Eduardo Escobar on achieving 10 years of MLB service. Should the Mets trade for a starting pitcher, and for who?

Interview with Dwight Gooden:
1986 World Series Champion, Mets Legend

  • VINTAGE TAG: Doc will play in the game and expects to start. Can’t get much more than 65 MPH these days. Believes Lenny Dykstra should be invited to play.
  • PROPERTY: Sees the big difference in ownership under Steve Cohen. They hug ex-Mets and invite them back.
  • DESIRE: He set the tone for this team and created a close-knit clubhouse. Comparing this team’s combat readiness to their 1986 team.
  • MATT HARVEY: Tried to reach Harvey about drug problem but never heard back from him. Thinks he could offer him help through the similar experiences he’s been through.
