Not only does Drew Smith continue to post strikeouts on the field, his game off the field looks strong too – with a little help from fans.
The Mets aide, who is in the midst of his best season in the majors, tweeted to Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Cindy Kimberly, whom he met as she pitched first place at Citi Field on Thursday. Smith was the catcher for SI model Brooks Nader during her first pitch before the Mets got a two-run walk-off homer from Pete Alonso to beat the Cardinals 7-6 in 10 innings to win the series .
“See you at another game this year @wolfcindy? 👀,” Smith wrote over a tweet from the Mets official report on Kimberly, Yumi Nu’s day at Citi Field.
Fans, members of the media, and athletes tried to help Smith by flooding the tweet’s responses with funny and over-the-top examples of kindness that Smith most likely didn’t do. But they tried to help their guy wherever they could.
“Hello Drew! I just want to say thank you again for rescuing my grandma from this burning building,” wrote @MrMet_CPA. “You were always so there for me. Glad to have you here mate!!!!”
“Hey Drew, remember that time you helped me clean out my flooded basement?” @SportsAngle tweeted. “My family still talks about how good your technique was. Good luck with all these charities!”
Kimberly must have noticed something because the 23-year-old Dutch model returned Smith’s flirtation with a sweet reply.
“Let me know next time you need a lucky charm 😌,” Kimberly wrote.
Smith, 28, and the Mets are doing well so far. He has a 1.53 ERA and a .96 WHIP with 20 strikeouts in 16 appearances as he has become one of the Amazin’s most reliable bullpen weapons during their 26-14 start – good enough for first place in the NL East.
