Max Scherzer’s injury adds a dose of reality to the Mets’ start

The Mets came out with the best pitching tandem in baseball this year. Now they don’t know when one of their aces will take the mound again.

Just before Pete Alonso delighted Queens with an extra inning and walk-off home run to beat the Cardinals, the Mets announced yesterday that Max Scherzer will join Jacob deGrom in a long excursion onto the injured list after a MRI had revealed the 37-year-old suffered a “moderate to severe internal oblique strain” the night before. The time frame for recovery is estimated to be six to eight weeks. DeGrom, who did not start this season due to a right shoulder blade injury, is left with no timetable for his return.

Though the Mets have built a seven-game cushion on NL East, the team will find it difficult to maintain their lead without Scherzer, who has signed a $130 million deal to join New York. The Mets also recently lost Tylor Megill, who was put on the injured list on Sunday with a right bicep infection.

New York Mets starting pitcher Max Scherzer #21 appears to be asking to be taken out during the sixth inning as the New York Mets play the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field in Queens on Wednesday, May 18, 2022 played.
Max Scherzer’s slanted load means the Mets will have to face the next six to eight weeks without either of their top two starters.

Before moving away from Wednesday’s start, Scherzer had lived up to expectations placed on the three-time Cy Young Award winner, winning 5-1 with a 2.54 ERA in eight starts. Scherzer has been one of the most reliable starters of his generation, averaging 31.6 starts over the past 12 full seasons (excluding the shortened 2020 season).
