Matthew Lawrence can credit the filming of the comedy Mrs. Doubtfire” with love.
The 42-year-old performed in the first year 90s con on Saturday, where he opened up about the wise advice his late costar Robin Williams gave him during filming.
Lawrence recalled how the Oscar winner warned him to “stay away” from drugs, particularly cocaine.
“He was the first adult to actually let me know about his condition. Let me full in,” said the Boy Meets World actor.
He continued: “I mean, as bright as he was on camera – I would visit him in his trailer to speak to him – it was painful for him. It’s really painful for him. He didn’t hide it. He spoke to me about it.”
Williams died 2014 at the age of 63 after suicide.
Lawrence then described the “gift” the popular comedian gave him: “Never do drugs. Especially cocaine.”
The former child star remarked: “[Williams] was very serious. He said, ‘Do you know when you’ll come to my trailer and see me like this?’ He says, ‘That’s why. And now I’m fighting for the rest of my life because I did something very stupid every day for 10 years. Do not do it.’ I stayed away from it because of him.”
Lawrence then revealed that the “Good Will Hunting” star was the reason why he resigned his role as Chris Hilliard (son of the Williams character) in “Mrs. Doubt.”
While Lawrence was “a hair away” from winning the role, “there was another strong choice that everyone else wanted.”
He continued, “The studio wanted that other boy … I don’t know who it was, I was only 9 years old. But I started to feel like something wasn’t right because there was such a little pause and a bit of awkwardness and I was always the quiet one.”
As the two performed their screen test later in the audition process, Williams attempted to improve Lawrence’s odds by “doing something.”
“He secretly reached behind my back and pinched me so hard,” said the “Brotherly Love” star. “The studio started howling and crying. I got the role because of that little moment opposite the other boy. It was all Robin Williams. “I know what I’m going to do to get this boy this job.” Thanks Rob.”
“Mrs. Doubtfire” also starred Sally Field, Mara Wilson, Pierce Brosnan, Harvey Fierstein, Robert Prosky and Lisa Jakub.
