The timer has expired for Matt Lucas to host The Great British Bake Off.
Lucas, 48, announced that after three years on the popular series known as The Great British Baking Show in the US, where it streams on Netflix, he is “happily passing the baguette on to someone else.”
“Goodbye Bake Off!” he tweeted on Tuesday. “It was a delicious experience and I can’t think of a more fun way to spend my summers, but I’ve realized that I can’t present Fantasy Football League and Bake Off alongside all my other projects.
“Well, after three series and 51 episodes, I’m happily passing the baguette on to someone else. I would like to express my heartfelt thanks and gratitude to everyone at Love Productions and Channel 4 as well as Noelipops, Paul, Dame Prue, the crew and of course the wonderful bakers for welcoming me to the tent.
“I wish whoever takes over the very best and I can’t wait to get ready for the next series without already knowing who won!” Lucas opted out.
The show answered to the news in a quote tweet, saying: “They have loved that Matt Lucas has graced our tent over the last three years, especially when laughs and smiles have been so much needed. We appreciate everything he’s done for Bake Off, from working through COVID bubbles to supporting the bakers. It was a pleasure – thank you Matt.”
Lucas has had his fair share of controversy both before and during his time on the show. He and fellow comedian David Walliams starred in Little Britain from 2003 to 2006. Jokes about the transgender community and black-faced Lucas didn’t sit well with modern audiences.
He apologized accordingly in 2017 and 2020, but found himself in hot water again when he made a comment about gluten-free diets on Bake Off a year ago. Also in 2021, Lucas appeared to mimic a candidate’s German accent, which offended some viewers.
While some fans of the show regretted seeing him go, it’s not surprising that many fans on Twitter are excited about his departure. Some shared that it was never theirs “kind of humor”, while another called him “Just a strange little man.”
“In the nicest way, and I mean it honestly, Matt Lucas’ departure from Bake Off made my week,” another claims.
“I had to use public transport to get home for the first time and an hour’s journey took 2.5 hours. But Matt Lucas stopped baking so it’s fine,” another said.
