Matt Gaetz is not the sharpest tool in the warehouse. Months after COVID began overwhelmingly targeting undisturbed Trump voters, as it stands, Florida lawmaker is still telling them grasp it on purpose. He also reported used Venmo to pay the guy who helped embroil him in a sex-trafficking scandal that brought him under federal investigation. And remember that time in the summer when he launched some sort of branding plan to make former president Donald Trump the speaker of the House? Well, he still seems to think it’s possible.
At a news conference on Tuesday, Gaetz was asked if he would like Trump to be the first House leader who is not an elected politician. He beamed, “I will.” When asked if he still talks to himself about it, he replied: “I do.”
When Gaetz first went public with the idea in July, it led some to question: Is that, you know, even possible? And it is, kind of! In fact, as recently as January 2019, a non-member of the House received a single vote for the position, which went to Nancy Pelosi. That person: Joe Biden.
The idea that Trump would go from resort wedding toaster and shady social media god to Speaker of the House seemed far-fetched, but strange things have happened. And the legislator knows it. That’s why, soon after Gaetz came up with the idea, House Democrats introduced a bill called the MEMBERSHIP Act, which prohibits anyone who is not an elected representative from recording through their government agency.
Then again, does Trump, the big man with the big desk, even want the gig? Possibly, although it will definitely defeat failed blogger.
