ONE ASTEROID more than twice the size of the Empire State Building is heading towards us.
Asteroid 7482 (1994 PC1) is estimated to be about 3,551 feet wide.
If Nasa’s estimate is correct, the space rock is even larger than the Burj Khalifa, which is the tallest building on Earth.
The US space agency is keeping a close eye on the giant space rock.
It has been added to the ‘Nearly Approach’ list.
The giant asteroid will shoot past Earth from a distance of 1.2 million miles.
This seems pretty far-fetched but it’s really not spatially.
Nasa considers anything that passes within 120 million miles of Earth as a Near-Earth Object (NEO).
Thousands of NEOs are tracked by scientists to see if they are on their way to collide with our planet.
Any fast-moving space object within 4.65 million miles is considered “potentially dangerous” by cautious space organizations.
A small change to their orbits could spell disaster for the Earth.
Asteroid 7482 (1994 PC1) will travel at just under 44,000 miles per hour.
This asteroid is expected to pass through Earth’s orbit every 30 years or so.
The next week the closest approach will be around 4:51pm ET (9:51pm GMT).
It is not expected to come this close again in 200 years.
The Virtual telescope project will stream the asteroid’s close encounter if you want to watch it.
