MASON MOUNT became only the THIRD English star to score a Champions League goal at the Bernabeu on Tuesday night.
That blues went into the quarter-finals second leg and needed a small miracle to progress – and almost did.
Thomas Tuchel’s side took a 3-0 lead in the Spanish capital after losing the first leg 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.
And her incredibly early comeback was fueled by mason mountain – who joins a short list of England players to score at the Bernabeu.
The 23-year-old England midfielder was lucky to find the ball just 16 yards from his feet.
But he made no mistake with the finish as he smacked the ball past Thibaut Courtois to make it 1-0.
Mount was only the third Englishman to score in a Champions League game at the Bernabeu.
Only Alan Smith for Leeds in 2001 and Danny Welbeck for Manchester United in 2013 had managed the feat of rocketing the Chelsea star.
But unfortunately for Mount, his goal – much like punches from Welbeck and Smith – ultimately went in vain real Madrid started a late comeback of their own.
After Mount’s goal, Antonio Rüdiger made it 2-0 before Timo Werner really impressed Chelsea with his goal.
In fact, Chelsea were unlucky not to take a 4-0 lead after Marcos Alonso cruelly – and controversially – saw his Strike ruled out by VAR.
Carlo Ancelotti, trailing 3-4 on aggregate, made a series of bold substitutions to keep his side’s Champions League campaign alive – including introducing Rodrygo for Casemiro.
It paid off immediately Luka Modric floated in a magical outside flank serving up the Brazilian to a pounding volley from close range to send the game into overtime.
And just six minutes into the extra half hour, Karim Benzema continued his blistering form as he nodded home after a costly Rudiger slip.
The goal gave Real 5-4 on aggregate and sent Los Blancos on course to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
