Britain’s ‘For the Best Holiday’ has been named and it sits on the shores of Loch Lundie in the Scottish Highlands.

The lodge, called The Sheiling, only reopened in May but is already an award-winning property and the work of mason Martin Matheson.

The 50-year-old spent 10 months creating the land for the tenants – after his wife Mairi discovered the 38-acre plot was for sale in 2017.

Martin wanted to create a modern take on a crannog (a Gaelic stilt house) but, at the urging of planners, he settled on a roundhouse with stilts enclosing the water.

The finished product is a beautiful vacation home with an open plan kitchen and living area, two bedrooms and two bathrooms. While outside, on deck, there’s a private sunken hot tub and breathtaking lake views.

There is also a private pier and a small rowing boat that visitors can use to fish for trout.

Martin said: ‘Everything in this job takes three times longer than in a normal job, but it’s just the three of us doing it.

‘I wouldn’t trust many people with it. It is my design, my child.

‘The Sheiling offers guests an unforgettable luxury holiday experience with complete peace and seclusion.

‘In winter, the lake freezes over and you have 3 inches of ice; it’s all white and then you have starry nights.

‘The location is peaceful, quiet and secluded. You sit on the deck to watch fish jump, birds fly by and sometimes swans fly by, or just enjoy from the hot tub with a bottle of wine.

‘The feedback from visitors has been amazing, it’s my proudest achievement with this work.’

Rates for holiday homes located near the village of Plockton start from £960 for a short stay and £1,280 for a week long stay.

In addition to winning ‘best holiday allowed’ at the Sykes Holiday Cottages awards, it also won ‘best view’.

Speaking of the awards, Martin said: ‘I was surprised to win the award, when Ryan from Sykes called he said “congratulations on your win in the best view category.”

“I said ‘thank you very much’, then joked ‘why didn’t I get the best win? ” I was shocked when he said “funny you should have said it, you actually did.”

‘About an hour later, I called Ryan back to request an email to prove it wasn’t a rumour.’
