Karen Gillan rose to fame as a member of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Like other actors in the franchise, she doesn’t necessarily always know what’s going on. It turns out Nebula cast was confused about the origins of her characters.
Actress Karen Gillan stars as Nebula in several Marvel films
Scottish actress Karen Gillan has played the character of Nebula in the MCU since 2014. As the adopted daughter of Mad Titan Thanos and sister to Gamora, she worked with villain Ronan the Accuser to recover an Infinity Stone in the first installment Guardians of the Galaxy Movie. This put her at odds with the title holders, including her sister, and revealed their strained relationship and mutual hatred born of a childhood of abuse and competition.
Gillan reprized the role several times: In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame. Over the course of the films, Nebula transforms from a dangerous antagonist to a reluctant ally. She also begins to reconcile with Gamora after they both realize that many of their problems stem from their father’s actions. She becomes a key figure in defeating Thanos once and for all, fully joining the Guardians, and embarking on future film adventures in space.
Gillan was wrong about her character’s species
In a video for WIRED, Gillan spoke about her performance as Nebula. She calls her “one of [her] Favorite Characters” she’s ever played. While she nailed her performances, the next question revealed that she wasn’t always aware of comic book techniques.
Answering the question: “What race does Nebula belong to Guardians of the Galaxy?” Gillan replied that she initially thought she was Kree. At first glance, this would be an easy mistake, as much of her original appearance had her working for the Kree Ronan. However, someone on set corrected her: Nebula is actually a luphomoid.
Like the Kree, Luphomoids are primarily blue-skinned humanoids screen rant. In the comics, their planet is ruled by a military dictatorship, creating another resemblance to the Kree’s own empire. Beyond that, however, not much has been revealed about the Luphomoids, largely because Galactus ate their homeworld. And few other members of the species other than Nebula have ever been seen. With that in mind, Gillan can’t be blamed for her additional comment about not knowing what a luphomoid is, since even big comic fans don’t.

In the same video, Gillan answered a question about how she was cast to play Nebula. She shared a story about her first audition and then got a call back to perform for James Gunn herself. Gillan ran a screen test for the character, during which they “made me bald and blue,” as she put it. She “broke down in tears” during the screen test, which didn’t seem planned given the way she spoke. Still, it seemed appropriate for the scene she was asked to do, and those outbursts of emotion earned her the role.
