Martin said shoppers were able to get a discount code by filling up their online cart but not buying anything.

This causes some retailers to offer you the opportunity to get a discount in an auction to convince you to make a purchase.

He says: “Have you recently done the old ‘putting to cart online’ trick to see if you’d be sent a discount code afterwards?

“If so, did it work and in what stores?”

The responses varied, with some saying it happened to them but others saying they only got the discount after making a purchase.

One Twitter user said: “Sellers who buy now on eBay will often drop their prices immediately after saving an item on your watchlist.”

Another said: “Bought my curtains online from Dunelm last week.

“Forget them in the basket. Walk away.

“When [I] came back a few hours later, 5% discount is being offered. “

“I didn’t even know about this until ‘allocated device time’ caused me to shut down so I put my phone down,” another added.

“A few hours later, I received an email offering a discount. No tricks but this is unfair to those who buy and continue to complete the transaction. Double pricing is unfair.”

Others said the same trick worked at Amazon, Adidas and Wayfair.

It might be worth a try, but it’s not guaranteed to get you a discount code.

The tip comes in when retailers are offering Black Friday discounts and can help shoppers save extra money.

If you’re shopping during the Black Friday sale, make sure you compare prices elsewhere to check you’re getting the best deal.

You should really only buy something if you already plan to make a purchase, otherwise it’s not really a sale.

Martin also shared his Black Friday tips this morning, saying you should only buy something if you’ve checked to see if it’s cheaper elsewhere.

“If you’re asking yourself: Do I need it? Can I afford it? Did I check it out cheaper elsewhere?” he say.

“If not, ask yourself: Would I use it? Is it worth it? I’ve checked to see if it’s cheaper elsewhere? If the answer to any of these is no. DON’T. PURCHASE.”
