Marcelo Bielsa praises Patrick Bamford after replacing Leeds

Marcelo Bielsa praised Patrick Bamford’s “opportunism” after a substitute’s stoppage-time equalizer ensured a 2-2 draw against the home side Brentford

Bamford, who replaced Junior Firpo in the 70th minute, marked his return after being ruled out since mid-September with a robbery-related ankle injury. Leeds one point in the fifth minute of extra time.

Brentford pairing Shandon Baptiste and Sergi Canos turned the game around with goals early in the second half after Tyler Roberts’ first Premier League goal at Elland Road gave Leeds the lead.

Bielsa was clearly grateful for Bamford’s second goal of the season, which lifted his side to 14th in the table, six points above the relegation zone.

“The players are used to scoring normally, they are in the right place at the right time,” Bielsa said. “What you appreciate about this goal is its opportunism.

“Patrick scored a goal scorer. His time on the pitch made it very difficult to find the ball, but in the end he brought us the equalizer, which was very valuable to our expectations, based on how we got it.

“Before the game it was not a good result, after the first half it was not like that, but when the game is over we need to appreciate what we have.”

Leeds took control early in the second half and a one-handed save by Brentford goalkeeper Alvaro Fernandez prevented Luke Ayling’s header from widening the gap.

But the visitors stunned Leeds with two goals in seven minutes against Baptiste and then Canos and appear to be heading for their fifth win of the season.

Bielsa added: “Drawing the game the way we did it changes the taste, but if you look at the game in its general context, we should have won it.

The Leeds manager said he was waiting to find out the full extent of captain Liam Cooper’s injury, which forced the 15th minute break, and Kalvin Phillips who was drawn in the 55th minute.

Brentford manager Thomas Frank couldn’t hide his disappointment, but was full of praise for his side, who were without Ivan Toney after the five-goal forward tested positive for coronavirus.

Frank said: “At the moment, I am not celebrating. What I will celebrate is the performance.

“A top performance. First half, really good start, the first 10, 15 minutes, Leeds took the lead and we defended very, very well.

“We give nothing but the goal. Other than that, nothing. In the second half we went forward, pressed the pitch a little more and scored two very good goals.

“We were in complete control. I would say they didn’t create anything and at the last minute a second goal. That’s one of the difficulties.”

The bee in front of Canos fell to the ground after what appeared to be something thrown from Leeds while celebrating his goal.

Frank added: “I haven’t spoken to him and I don’t know what happened.” Marcelo Bielsa praises Patrick Bamford after replacing Leeds
