Manhattan DAs have cleared nearly 200 convictions related to dirty NYPD cops

Manhattan prosecutors on Thursday vacated nearly 200 misdemeanor convictions based on the work of eight dirty NYPD cops who were found to have taken bribes, stolen or lied at work.

The move was part of a review by prosecutors of cases involving officers who were later convicted of various criminal charges including perjury, falsifying records, marriage and even drug trafficking.

“While most law enforcement officers and police officers are dedicated officers, these eight officers, who have played integral roles in hundreds of arrests, have criminally abused their positions of power,” prosecutor Alvin Bragg said in a statement.

More than half of the 188 cases — from 2001 to 2016 — in which the prosecutor’s office is seeking a dismissal ended with fines being imposed or the defendants jailed, though none are currently behind bars, prosecutors said.

Similar efforts in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens district attorneys’ offices have resulted in 600 convictions being handed down this year.

One of the cops in the Manhattan DA’s review was ex-official Richard Hall, who was closing a plea deal on numerous counts of bribes and official misconduct after he was accused of raping a teenager in a police van in 2017.

Another officer was Jason Arbeeny — a former Brooklyn cop who planted a pair of drugs in 2007 and was sentenced to probation in 2012.

Disgraced ex-Detective Michael Foder was also named in the review. Foder lied on the spot and forged documents in a robbery case in 2015 and 2016.

Elizabeth Felber, director of the Legal Aid Society’s Wrongful Convictions Unit, commended Bragg for his office’s actions and encouraged prosecutors to “conduct these reviews on an ongoing basis and with full transparency.”

“While this moment brings some justice and closure to these New Yorkers, they have been forced to endure hardships that should never have happened,” Felber added.
