‘THAT’S THE DIFFERENCE’
Gary Neville has explained how Ralf Rangnick’s new ‘box midfield’ is designed to prevent Manchester United from conceding.
The Reds beat Crystal Palace 1-0 on Sunday in Germany’s first game and Neville has heaped praise on the disciplined new look of his former club.
Speaking on Sky on Monday night, Nev said: “We’ll start with the classic box in the back, McTominay, Fred and two centre-backs.
“It’s very difficult to counter-attack if you have those four players together.
“The problem is at Man Utd and the reason I respected 60 minutes yesterday is that after 30 minutes of not scoring, it’s very easy for one of those midfielders to go ahead.
“It is easy for one of them to pay out of position and leave the centre-backs alone.
“And that is what happened with Aston Villa.
“Had to go back to Old Trafford… it’s like a big pitch. Jamie will tell you that from when he played there.
“You have to keep attacking in football and you have to stop the teams from counter-attacking you or it eats away at your confidence.
“And that was the difference yesterday.
“You’ve got the box, so when Man Utd served in the third inning, they pushed the players forward.
“But when Fred gives the ball, those four players will be there immediately to knock Crystal Palace out.”
