Man Utd were outraged after Middlesbrough equalized despite Duncan Watmore having clear handball.. even AFTER VAR check

MANCHESTER UNITED came under fire after Middlebrough equalized at Old Trafford – despite a blatant handball.

The ball bounced off clearly from sub-handler Duncan Watmore in the penalty area.

However, Anthony Taylor did not blow the whistle.

And knowing that if he scored with his next touch the goal would be ruled out, the Middlesbrough forward lifted the ball past Dean Henderson but missed the target.

Matt Crooks reached the post to score to make it 1-1 in their FA Cup fourth round clash.

However, United players, staff and fans couldn’t believe the goal was allowed to stand – especially after a VAR review.

Even Boro’s bench cannot be ruled out.

But VAR ruled the tackle was random and as Watmore failed to score, the champions leveled the score, to the delight of 9,443 traveling fans.

A change in the wording of the game’s rules last summer meant it couldn’t be changed.

The update, explained on the Premier League’s website, said: “If an attacking player accidentally lets the ball touch his hand immediately before another player scores, the goal will be awarded, when last season it is likely to have been disqualified.

“However, a player will still be penalized if he unintentionally plays with his hand immediately before scoring himself.”

Cristiano Ronaldo led the protest with his United teammates as they surrounded Taylor – but their complaints were fruitless and the goal was scored.

But United legend Rio Ferdinand and resting goalkeeper David De Gea have none of that.

Ferdinand tweeted: “What is the meaning of VAR…” accompanied by a poo emoji.

De Gea shared the post and just added a shocked emoji.

And Alex Bruce didn’t have it.

The former Manchester United youth team defender and Hull City striker told the BBC: “You could clearly see Duncan Watmore, the ball bounced and hit his arm when he scored.

“It hit his hand, oh my god he scored the goal. I don’t believe it.

“You can clearly see when the ball goes into the box!”

Lee Dixon added on ITV: “Watmore’s touch is not the best and he controls it manually.

“It has to be given in the form of a handball. If it is a defender, it will be a penalty.”
