On Monday night, Rooney said: “I think Manchester United are not a challenge, I think they would want the season to be abandoned now if it were possible.

“Forget the Champions League, they won’t play next year if they qualify for it.

“I think they need to remodel.

“Rebuild the squad, rebuild everything around the first team, rebuild around the club to make sure they put themselves in a position to actually challenge again for the Premier League in three years.”

And Rooney has opened up on who he wants to sign from United in the summer Derby gaffer prefers Mauricio Pochettino to Erik ten Hag.

He remarked: “I think Pochettino made it in the Premier League; he knows the Premier League.

“He brought a lot of young players through to Tottenham, including Southampton [he] brought many young players through.

“If I choose one of the two, I would choose him. I would go with Pochettino and give him time.”

Before adding: “For managers, they need time now to come in and actually transfer their blueprint to the club and the team.

“And if you give him time, I think he’ll do well.”
