Man suspected of throwing severed head down German courthouse

Police in Germany arrested a suspect accused of throwing a human head outside the Bonn Regional Court on Tuesday night.

The decapitated body of the victim, described as a 44-year-old homeless man, was found less than a mile away on the Rhine.

Local police did not name the suspect but said it was a 38-year-old man from the Bonn area who is also believed to be homeless, local newspaper General-Anzeiger reported. It is not known at this time whether the two men knew each other.

Police responded to the stately courthouse after receiving calls around 5:30 p.m. from eyewitnesses who said they saw the suspect place the human head on the front steps.

“At first we thought there was an object,” said a young man sitting with his friends at a bar overlooking the courthouse. “Only then did we recognize the hair.”

The Bonn police hid the human head with a tarpaulin after the call to the scene of the crime. The suspect was found sitting outside a neighboring courthouse.

Officers found the suspect crouching on the steps of a neighboring courthouse and took him into custody without incident.

Police said the suspect was known to them from previous drug-related interactions.

A coroner should examine the victim’s body on Wednesday, police spokesman Robert Scholten told the newspaper.

The headless body of the 44-year-old victim was found 15 minutes from the courthouse near the Rhine.

“The background to the crime is still unclear,” added Scholten.

The gun used to behead the victim has not yet been found, but police used K-9 dogs to try to locate it.

It is still unclear how the suspect got to the courthouse, 15 minutes away, from the Rhine, where the victim was likely decapitated.
