HOUSTON, TX (KTRK) — A family is mourning the loss of a 24-year-old man who was shot dead in a fight outside a bowling alley early Sunday morning.
“Greg was a very caring person,” said Kevin Shead, Greg’s uncle. “He would take the shirt off his back.”
The family identified Greg Shead as the man who was shot dead outside a bowling alley on Bunker Hill Road around 1:20am on Sunday
Houston police said an argument escalated outside between two groups after the bowling alley closed.
If the name Greg Shead sounds familiar, that’s because he was a star basketball player in the Houston area. His trophies and awards are on display at his grandparents’ home, who ABC13 spoke to.
“Who could wish for a better grandson?” Jesse Shead, his grandfather, said.
Shead’s influence is felt throughout the community as the former basketball star played for Atascocita High School.
The ABC13 sports team captured footage of Shead being remembered as the leader on the pitch.
“He started dribbling basketball when he was three or four years old and he was very good at it,” Jesse said.
The team was ranked 38-0 at the national level in the season before losing to Desoto in the 2016 state championship game. He made important contributions to the team along with future NBA player Carson Edwards of the Celtics and Fabian White of the University of Houston.
He recently moved to California but often returned to Houston to visit his family and 11-month-old daughter.
“Not a week went by that we didn’t talk to little Greg,” Jesse said.
This trip home was to be unique because Greg brought his girlfriend from California and introduced her to his family.
According to his grandfather, he went bowling with his girlfriend, his mother, and several other family members.
“I will miss him,” said his grandfather.
The Houston Police Department said it is reviewing the surveillance footage. The suspect is said to have driven away in a white SUV.
“There’s another person who just lost their life over something that could have been avoided entirely, it doesn’t make sense,” Kevin said.
