An Asian straphanger was cut in the face in an unprovoked attack on the Manhattan subway on Sunday, police officers said.
The 41-year-old victim was on a northbound J-train when it pulled into Delancey Street/Essex Street station on the Lower East Side at around 8:30 a.m. when a stranger cut him in the face with a razor blade, they said Police officers.
An NYPD spokeswoman called the attack “unprovoked.”
Brendan Dowling, 39, allegedly fled the train at the station, but the victim was able to stop police, who arrested him, officers said.
Dowling was charged with assault and tampering with physical evidence, police officers said. He is said to have thrown the knife onto the roadway while trying to escape.
The NYPD Hate Crimes Task Force was notified of the attack, a police spokeswoman said.
Dowling was last arrested on December 16 for criminal possession of stolen property after allegedly stealing construction tools from 43 Exchange Place, police officers said.
