Man convicted of murdering his pregnant wife is sentenced to life in prison

A man convicted of murdering his pregnant wife and their unborn child has been sentenced to life in prison.

A judge on Wednesday sentenced Scott Peterson, 49, to 15 years in prison for the death of their unborn son Conner. He killed Lacy Peterson, 27, who was eight months pregnant in 2002.

Judge Anne-Christine Massullo of the Superior Court of San Mateo County ordered Peterson to be served without parole.

His sentence was quashed last year by the Supreme Court of California, which found that individual jurors disagreed with the death penalty overturned.

Before Scott was sentenced, Laci’s mother Sharon Rocha called him a ‘coward’ and said he should admit to killing them.

She said: “No matter what happens, no matter what happens in the future, two things will never change, Laci and Conner will always die and you will always be their killer. .

Rocha details the last time she saw and talked to her daughter.

‘I don’t see you sad or regretful at all. I know you’ll say you don’t regret it because you’re innocent, but you don’t show any grief or distress for either of you,’ Rocha said. ‘I still feel grief every day after 19 years.’

Scott murdered Laci five years after they were married. Her body was dumped at the Berkeley marina on Christmas Eve and washed ashore. Prosecutors said Scott tried to cover up the crime by acting as if she was missing.

A jury convicted Scott of murdering Laci and their unborn child in 2004 and he was convicted the following year.

On Wednesday, Brent Rocha, Laci’s brother, said Scot ‘deserve the death penalty’ and ‘the harshest possible sentence’.

Amy Rocha, Laci’s older sister, choked up saying she felt ‘cheated’ because of her sister.

“I don’t know how you go on living,” Amy told Scott, adding that he should be ‘punished in this life and beyond’.
