Pep Guardiola warned his Manchester City players that they needed to be ready to play immediately.
The Man City boss is hoping the depth of his squad will be tested in the coming weeks with little rest in their schedule.
The club currently have four matches out of nine in the four-week period between the November international break and December 19.
Guardiola says he will need to take a number of factors into account when choosing his team and that players will need to expect the unexpected.
“Sometimes we let them rest but everyone has to be ready, they know it,” said Guardiola, who has almost a full squad ready for next Saturday’s Premier League trip. Watford after some trauma problems at Aston Villa in the middle of the week.
“Sometimes I get mad and make decisions that people don’t think about, and some people don’t expect to play the game, like Cole Palmer against Everton Nobody expected that and he played.
“Everybody has to be ready and it’s good that everyone is back because December has been really tough with the number of games. We need everyone fresh to win, win and win again. ”
One player Guardiola has no qualms about being available is Phil Foden The England midfielder has not featured in any of the last three games due to an ankle injury but he has managed to return as soon as possible.
The 21-year-old was an unused substitute in Wednesday’s win over Aston Villa and is competing to play at Vicarage Road.
“He’s a guy who, in (our) experience together, holds the pain,” said Guardiola. He’s in pain but it doesn’t matter, (he said), ‘I play, I play’.
“So when he’s upset and says he’s not feeling well, it’s because he’s not feeling well. Here’s what happened.
“But he is a very tolerant guy. Usually, when you’re training with pain, you can’t get up in the morning and clean everything up, but he’s a guy with no problems. He likes playing football too much.
“Even in a bad situation, he wants to play and play, and it’s not all like this.”
Guardiola pointed out that doesn’t mean he will encourage players to play through the pain, but anyone who doesn’t participate could lose their place to someone else.
He said: “Talk to all the managers, there are players who want to play even if they are injured and (have) others (who are not). For example, in my career, I have been softer. When I’m in pain, I’m in pain and I don’t want to play.
“If there is a problem, someone else will come and if he plays (well), he will continue.
“But if he gets hurt, he gets hurt. No problem. I never push a player who doesn’t feel good to play.
“If he doesn’t play, someone else will come, wait your moment.
“When you’re healthy, convince me and your teammates that you’re ready to help us win games. It doesn’t get any more complicated than that.”
