Man arrested after fighting NYPD officers and throwing one like ‘a rag doll’
A man who struggled with two NYPD officers who were trying to stop him from blocking traffic at a Brooklyn intersection was arrested Tuesday, police said.
Zayan Shar, 21, was charged with assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct brawl caught on camera According to the NYPD on Friday afternoon at Avenue H and Flatbush Avenue in South Midwood near Brooklyn College.
Shar ignored officers’ orders to exit the intersection and began fighting with the couple after they tried to arrest him, officers said.
Video of the incident shows the suspect throwing one of the police officers in the middle of the street.
Police said the officer who was pushed to the ground was also hit in the face and left with swelling and bruises. The other officer was not injured.
Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and associate professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, told the Post that New York City politics appear to make police fearful of using violence at work.
“I’ve seen a number of viral videos showing the same thing – NYPD cops are trying to take custody of a single suspect and are unable to do so because of all the rules that are imposed on them,” Giacalone said.
Giacalone said officers got lucky.
“It could have ended very badly for her. Forget the embarrassing part, I’m talking dead,” he said. “This boy could have done anything he wanted. He threw that one cop like they were a rag doll.”
