M3GAN Director Reveals Thought Process Behind Viral Dance

It smashed the internet.
Director Gerard Johnstone explained his thought process behind the now-viral clip from his upcoming horror film M3gan on Saturday, reports Entertainment Weekly exclusively.
The clip featuring the dancing Model 3 Generative Android (M3gan) has spawned several parodies and internet memes, making the killer doll iconic.
“It was one of those crazy, sleepless 3 o’clock thoughts,” Johnstone said.
“Wouldn’t it be kinda funny if the soundtrack suddenly became real and M3GAN ended up making a move to the music that’s playing. It was just something that everyone embraced and loved.”
According to one of the film’s producers, the creative team already had memes to use when needed.
“We had internally developed memes to distribute, but we ended up not having to use them because people started making their own,” said M3gan star and producer Allison Williams. “You can’t even dream that big when you’re doing something like that. It was just such an exciting day. It was a proof of concept.”

The film follows a roboticist named Gemma (played by Williams) who is suddenly put in charge of taking care of her niece Cady after her parents die suddenly. To help the young child cope with fear and loneliness, Gemma uses M3gan as the child’s friend. However, the robot increasingly protects the child.
“This is a film about people who don’t spend enough time with their children,” says Johnstone.
The dance has exploded on TikTok, with several users recreating the hilarious moment or using the android’s image as a meme.
An iconic moment was the premiere of the film, when several dancers dressed as robots managed to re-enact the dance for fans just before they saw the film. TikTok has garnered 1.3 million views.
“M3gan” is scheduled to hit theaters on January 6, 2023.
