Lyon scores the bottle-throwing fan who made Marseilles’ game aborted

December 9 – France’s top team Lyon grabbed a point after their home game against Marseille last month was abandoned when away team Dimitri Payet was hit in the head by a shard of a bottle.

The match, which was only five minutes old at the time of the incident, will be replayed from scratch behind closed doors on a date to be determined.

Lyon, who are 12th in Ligue 1, were asked to play two home games behind closed doors but they hosted Reims in an empty stadium, losing that match 2-1 last week.

Payet was doused with a full bottle of water from the Lyon assist as he took a corner. The Lyon fan responsible was arrested and received a suspended sentence of 6 months in prison, and banned from Lyon’s stadium for 5 years.

It is the latest incident of violence to scar a Ligue 1 game this season. Former France international Payet, 34, also suffered a callus during a match in Nice in August.

On Wednesday, Marseille was fined €10,000 separately for “discriminatory comments” aimed at Troyes South Korean player Suk Hyun-jun during a match on November 28.
