Lucky Washington Player Wins $747M Powerball Prize

DES MOINES, Iowa — Someone in Washington state beat big odds Monday night to win an estimated $747 million Powerball jackpot.

The winning numbers were 05, 11, 22, 23, 69 and the Powerball 07.

Lottery officials said in a statement early Tuesday that a single ticket matched all six numbers and was worth $754.6 million.

The full jackpot is awarded to a winner who chooses an annuity distributed in an immediate but partial payout, followed by additional payments over 29 years that increase by 5% annually. The winner can also choose to receive a one-time cash payment of US$407.2 million.

Both available prices are pre-tax amounts, Powerball said.

The lottery game’s website reveals that the jackpot for Thursday’s next draw has dropped to $20 million.

Monday night’s win was the first Powerball jackpot win since November 19, 2022. That winning streak kept the prize growing until it became the ninth largest prize in US history.

Higher interest rates have allowed annuity payments to increase compared to previous jackpots when interest rates were lower. Most winners prefer the instant cash prize.

The game’s miserable odds of 1 in 292.2 million are designed to land big prizes that attract more players. This strategy has certainly worked lately, with someone in Maine winning a $1.35 billion Mega Millions prize in January and a California player winning a record 2.04 Powerball jackpot last November billion US dollars cracked. No one has claimed any of these awards.

Powerball is played in 45 states, as well as in Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.
