The mother-of-three, who was found dead at her Los Angeles home over the weekend, was charged with the murder on Tuesday.
Angela Flores, 38, is accused of killing 8-year-old Nathan Yanez, 10-year-old Kevin Yanez and 12-year-old Natalie Flores, whose bodies were discovered Sunday morning at their home in the West Hills neighborhood of Los Das the Angeles County Attorney’s Office said.
The cause of death was further investigated.
Police said Flores admitted to investigators that she killed the children and claimed that a teenager helped her.
A 16-year-old boy was arrested with Flores, but prosecutors did not announce charges against him. The teenager was in juvenile detention.
Flores reportedly had several other children, but authorities didn’t immediately say if the teen was her son.
It was not immediately clear if Flores had an attorney speaking for her. She remained incarcerated on $6 million bail.
“We all mourn these children. The loss of her young life is a tragedy that affects our entire community,” District Attorney George Gascón said in a statement.
Investigators have not released a possible motive for the murders.
Seven hours before they were found dead, the mother was taken to a hospital because neighbors said she was acting strangely.
Prisila Canales, who lives near the ranch-style home where the killings took place, told reporters that a disturbance broke out late Saturday night during which Flores screamed and acted erratically until someone called authorities .
Canales said paramedics put the woman on a stretcher and she fought back, screaming, “Where’s my Bible?”
Just before 1 a.m., the fire department responded to a “medical response” request from police, fire department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart told the Los Angeles Times.
Jacob Corona, Flores’ ex-husband, told the Times that she made odd remarks when she called him almost a week before the killings.
“She told me all this stuff about God. She didn’t sound right. I don’t really know what happened,” Corona said.
“She wasn’t really religious before,” he said. “But then she talked about death. I said to her, ‘What’s going on?’ My head was going through so many things, but I didn’t think anything of it.”
The couple married in 2001 and divorced in 2007. They had one child together who did not live with Flores and was not among the children who died, Corona said.
The children’s deaths are being investigated by the LAPD’s Juvenile Division’s Child Abuse Unit, the Times said.
The LA County Department of Children and Family Services said it could not comment on whether it was involved in the family, the Times said.
