Los Angeles Attorney George Gascon was slammed by Rep. Mike Garcia over a Memorial Day tweet

Republican Congressman Mike Garcia slapped progressive Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon on Saturday over a tweet Gascon posted to commemorate Memorial Day.

“I enlisted in the US Army when I was 18,” Gascon tweeted. “Wishing everyone a happy and safe Memorial Day weekend as we think of and remember those who have served our country.”

Garcia, who represents California’s 25th congressional district, slammed the tweet while also criticizing Gascon’s handling of crimes committed in Los Angeles.

“Are you a ghost?” Garcia, a former United States Navy pilot, answered. “If not, you have the wrong holiday @GeorgeGascon. Veterans Day is in November. This weekend we honor those who didn’t make it home. It’s not difficult. Also, the difference between felonies and misdemeanors is not recognized.”

Gascon has been widely criticized for a policy that prohibits his assistant prosecutors from demanding cash bail especially families of victims of a crime wave that has plagued Los Angeles for the last few years.

Earlier this month, Gascon has reversed this policy.

“After listening to the community, victims and members of this office, I have decided to allow limited exceptions to the pre-trial release policy while such a program is completed,” read a memo circulated through his office.

Growing dissatisfaction with Gascon has sparked a recall campaign that has collected over 400,000 signatures, with organizers believing they will hit the mark needed to put a recall vote on the ballot.

That Remember George Gascon’s campaign has so far collected more than 450,000 signatures since last week, it said. The group must collect 566,857 signatures, 10% of registered voters, by July 6 to qualify to vote.

The recall attempt is the second attempt after the first attempt failed to collect enough signatures by the deadline.

In addition, more than 30 cities in Los Angeles County have voted no confidence in Gascon.

Gascon’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.
