Mandelson is a European Trade Commissioner with a salary of more than £200,000 funded by taxpayers while his companion pictured has been publicly accused of having sex with a minor a year earlier.

Former Cabinet Minister Mandelson was introduced to Epstein by Ghislaine Maxwell – like she introduced Prince Andrew to the American financier.

Last month Maxwell was found guilty of bribing young girls for Epstein to abuse.

Prince Andrew and the “Prince of Darkness” – as Mandelson became known – also continued to enjoy a friendship, with the MP even lobbying for the duke to obtain a British plum trading note.

This photo of Labour’s former Communications Director with Epstein was taken after Epstein was formally accused of soliciting a prostitute in August 2006.

A US grand jury has refused to indict the former Wall Street trader on charges of having sex with a minor – even though a police investigation has uncovered evidence he abused the internet. adolescent girl.

Epstein finally pleaded guilty to child prostitution in 2008 – after our picture with Mandelson was taken.

But articles published before the photo detailed how the late tycoon allegedly massaged 14-year-old girls and performed sex acts with minors.

A source told The Sun on Sunday night: “This proves how incredibly close Peter Mandelson is to Jeffrey Epstein, even as his crimes are being exposed.

“Without a doubt, Peter has questions to answer on this matter.

“It also illuminates the cozy relationship Jeffrey, Ghislaine, Prince Andrew and Peter shared during this period.”

Mandelson, now 68, is shown in our exclusive photo while sitting at the dining table at Epstein’s £10million mansion in Foch Avenue.

Wearing a suit with a white shirt, unbuttoned at the chest, former Labor MP smiles at Epstein, with a glass of red wine in front of him.

At the time, Mandelson had resigned as an MP – after resigning twice from government, including in 1998 over an investigation into the finances. In 2019, an acquaintance of Mandelson said he had met Epstein through Maxwell and had been with the mogul a total of “no more than five or six times”.

They added: “Peter only knew him because of his friendship with Ghislaine, whom he met in the 1980s and has known since.”

That was the decade when Prince Andrew, now 61, also met Maxwell, when she was an Oxford student.

But it was in the late 1990s and 2000s when Andrew and Mandelson’s social networks clashed.

Records show that Maxwell and Mandelson both attended a homeless event in London in 1998, attended by “famous and beautiful” people such as model Elle Macpherson.

Friendship with Andrew

The following year, the friendship between Mandelson and Andrew first surfaced in the newspapers when the Labor man was said to have regularly dined at the prince’s home then Sunninghill near Ascot, Berks.

He then agreed to join the Full Stop NSPCC campaign against child abuse led by Andrew, and appeared before a series of fundraisers the duke attended.

In 2000, both Mandelson and Andrew were reported to be witnesses at the wedding of banker Sir Evelyn de Rothschild to Lynn Forester in St John’s Wood, North London. American businessman Forester was a longtime friend of Epstein and Maxwell.

Then, in 2001, Mandelson is said to have helped Andrew become Britain’s special representative for Trade and Investment after the royals retired from the Navy.

Mandelson is said to have backed the duke behind the scenes and became a key figure in lobbying for him to get the job.

Both men worked in commerce – the world in which Epstein lived.

They have been spotted together at conferences and also built connections with other controversial wealthy men.

In 2009, both agreed to attend the 30th birthday of Goga Ashkenazi, the social media mistress of the son-in-law of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev, Timur Kulibayev.

He bought Sunninghill from Andrew in 2007, paying £3 million over the £12 million asking price in a deal that has never been properly explained.

In 2010, Kulibayev added Mandelson to his payroll after he spoke at an event organized by Samruk-Kazyna, the Central Asian nation’s private wealth fund.

Epstein’s radar

Mandelson and the prince also forged a relationship with Saif Gaddafi, the extremely wealthy son of the late Libyan dictator. Both were also on Epstein’s radar.

Andrew invited Epstein and Maxwell to the Queen’s “Dance of the Decades” party in 2000 at Windsor Castle, and they were also pictured visiting Sandringham that year.

The prince turned down a British commercial role in 2011 after photos emerged of him and Epstein walking together in Central Park in New York.

Mandelson accepted Epstein’s hospitality during glamorous dinners in Manhattan. One of their encounters included a £37,000 dinner party at Epstein’s New York mansion in 2002 – along with guests including Donald Trump.

He will also visit Epstein’s private Little St James island.

And in 2009, while Epstein was serving a prison sentence, Mandelson is said to have called him to be introduced to the head of JP Morgan Chase.

During the call, Epstein is said to have affectionately referred to Mandelson as “Petie”. Mandelson is also said to have been present at a meeting with Maxwell and Epstein in 2011 – a year after the sex offender was released from prison.

A friend later said that the meeting was a “complete accident” and that he was only invited along with his “old friend” Maxwell.

Virginia Giuffre, sexual assault accuser of Prince Andrew, who allegedly traded for powerful men, testified that she had met Mandelson.

She said: “I miss him [Mandelson] was at the house in New York, at a dinner party. He and Jeffrey talk business. I have never been asked to give him a massage.”

There is no suggestion that Lord Mandelson knew of any of Epstein’s crimes. The Sun on Sunday approached Mandelson for comment.
