‘Little House on the Prairie’ Actor Radames Pera Explained Why Victor French Left Show: ‘Michael Was Very Upset’

Michael Landon recruited actor Victor French to play the lovable hillman Isaiah Edwards Little house on the prairie. directed the show as executive producer and Main character Charles Ingalls, Landon called the shots when it came to casting and storylines. Their friendship behind the camera peaked when French received an inviting offer to helm a new sitcom.

Radames Pera went on to play John Sanderson Edwards, Isaiah’s adopted son Small house in seasons 2 and 3. He recalled that French received an offer for a sitcom, which the actor accepted after becoming frustrated with his Small house Contract. “The actor who played my adoptive father, Victor French, later did a pilot for another series,” Pera said FoxNews in 2020. “Michael has not offered him a serious contract. So he went on, but Michael was very upset. So Michael decided to write out the whole family. And then they had a personal argument.”
Small house Former Charlotte Stewart also recalled the rift between Landon and Edwards and mentioned the conflict in her memoir.
“Victor was very much in the frat group of Mike Landon and the crew,” she wrote Little House in the Hollywood Hills: A Bad Girl’s Guide to Becoming Miss Beadle, Mary X and Me. “The two had a big argument later on in the show when Victor left without Mike’s blessing to star in his own sitcom called Call Carter country. You can’t blame Victor for trying to earn more income and give his star a little boost. But Mike was angry and felt betrayed, and he wrote Mr. Edwards and his family off the show entirely.”

The ‘Little House’ character became a two-timer
Landon built a romance between John and Mary Ingalls (Melissa Sue Anderson) during the second and third seasons of Small house. When French left the show, Landon came up with a story in which John times Mary twice during his school days to write his character out of the series.
“The family suddenly disappears and Mary comes to visit me while I’m at college,” Pera explained of the episode at the beginning of Season 4. “And while I was writing her love letters, I was seeing another woman all the time. That’s how they cut off the audience’s interest in my character.”
While the plot seemed like a solid solution to Landon, Small house Fans apparently didn’t like the way John broke Mary’s heart.
“We got a lot of angry letters about it,” Pera admitted. “In fact, today when I perform in public with other performers, I still get fans screaming ‘cheaters!’ I just have to smile.”
‘Little House’ co-stars repaired their friendship and teamed up for ‘Highway to Heaven.’
The feud between Landon and French did not last. French returned to reprise his role Small house and later teamed up with Landon for the NBC hit highway to heaven.
“Michael and Victor eventually made up,” Pera noted. “And Victor came back to the set.”
Pera described Landon as a “talented workaholic” and credited the late actor with directing such a popular series Small house Debut to last episode.
“[Landon] He literally put his life into his work and creating entertainment for America,” noted Pera. “That was his goal. And he did a wonderful job at it. He could make you laugh and cry in one scene. There really is no one like him.”
