Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina on Sunday said he would not be a barrier to President Joe Biden’s plan to nominate a black woman to the US Supreme Court.
The White House has confirmed that US District Court Judge J. Michelle Childs is on President Joe Biden’s shortlist to replace retired Judge Stephen Breyer, according to a statement. USA Today.
Biden’s plan to let race and gender determine his nominees has been criticized.
“The irony is that the Supreme Court at that time was hearing cases of this kind of obvious racism while adding someone as a beneficiary of this kind of quota,” said the Party Senator. Republican Roger Wicker of Mississippi said on Friday, according to Fox News.

During an appearance on the CBS show “Face the Nation,” Graham was supportive, but was asked if he had told Jim Clyburn, the South Carolina Democrat who is Speaker of the House, that he would “yes” to Childs if she is the nominee.
“This is what I will tell him and the country. I—I can’t think of a better person for President Biden to consider for the Supreme Court than Michelle Childs,” Graham said, according to a CBS Scoreboard of the interview.
“She has broad support in our state. She is considered a fair-minded, highly gifted jurist. She is one of the kindest people I have ever met. It would be good for the court to have someone not at Harvard or Yale. She graduated from the University of South Carolina, a public education.
“She is a workers judge. She is highly qualified. She is a good character. And we’ll see how she does if she’s nominated. But I can’t say anything bad about Michelle Childs. She is a wonderful person,” Graham said.

Graham insures that he will not vote for someone who has not been nominated.
If she does, “she won’t be treated like Judge Kavanaugh, I promise you, by Republicans,” Graham claimed, referring to the high speed. smear campaign surrounding President Donald Trump’s nomination of incumbent Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the court in 2018.
“Let’s see how she does at the hearing. But I think I made it clear that I’m a huge admirer,” he said.
Graham offers his interpretation of the balance to the court.
“I would like to see the court have – a lot more balanced, some sort of general opinion on that. People don’t necessarily have to be from Harvard, Yale,” he said. “You can go to a public university and get a law degree.”
Graham says he sees little difference between Biden’s goal of having a black woman on the court and former President Ronald Reagan gender diversity goals led to the appointment of Sandra Day O’Connor.
Will President Joe Biden pick a qualified Supreme Court nominee?
Yes: 13% (67 Votes)
No: 87% (457 Votes)
“Put me in the camp of making sure the courts and other institutions look like America. You know, as Republicans, we’ve made a real effort to recruit women and people of color to make the party look more like America,” he said.
“Affirmative action is choosing someone who is unqualified for past wrongs,” he said. “Michelle Childs is extremely qualified. There is no affirmative action component if you choose her. She has a high level.”
Graham said Childs is not an aberration or a second best choice.
“I believe there are plenty of qualified African-American women, conservative and liberal, who can go to court. So I don’t concede – I don’t consider Michelle Childs an affirmative act,” he said.
“I find putting a black woman on the court makes the court more like America. In the history of our country, we’ve only had five serving women and two African-American men, so let’s make the courts more like America,” he said.
Graham noted a caveat.
“But qualification must be considered the most,” he said. “And for Michelle Childs, I think she’s qualified in every way.”
Childs was nominated to the federal bench by former President Barack Obama and has served as a district court judge since 2010. Politico.
Last month, Biden nominated Childs for a seat on the US Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, but the nomination has yet to be considered by the Senate.
In a separate interview with CBS, Clyburn said there’s a lot of symbolism in naming someone like Childs to the court.
“It tells every kid out there — growing up in just the right circumstances, needing help from the community to feed him, getting scholarships to go to school because they can’t afford to go otherwise, going to public school for you. didn’t do that. ‘ didn’t get an offer from one of the big private schools – it told them, ‘You have as many opportunities to benefit from the greatness of this country as anyone else,’ he said.
