Lincoln Memorial closes after Georgetown seniors leave broken bottles

The Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, was closed Saturday morning after a group of Georgetown University seniors left broken bottles and spilled wine on the memorial’s steps.

Hundreds of students had gathered to watch the sunrise on Saturday after Friday’s senior ball. Some took a dip in the Reflecting Pool.

The National Park Service announced a brief delay in accessibility to the Lincoln Memorial, saying the group left debris in the area.

“The Lincoln Memorial was closed this morning after a local university graduation ceremony where trash, broken bottles and spilled wine and champagne blanketed the steps,” the National Park Service announced Saturday morning.

The memorial reopened to the public around 11 a.m.

“Thanks to our staff for the quick cleaning this morning. The Lincoln Memorial is open. We appreciate your patience,” said the valet.
