LI husband and wife killed when boat capsizes in tragic crash: police

According to authorities, a Long Island couple were killed when their boat collided with another vessel and capsized in a tragic accident in the Great South Bay.

Louis Deritis, 53, and Renee Deritis, 50, of Oakdale, were sailing in a 27-foot 1989 OC/MA boat — with Louis at the helm — when the ship boarded a 44-foot Henriques Sport Fisherman boat around 10 a.m from 1989 collided: 40 a.m. Sunday, Suffolk County Police said.

The ship then capsized in Great South Bay, north of Ocean Bay Park, between the North Channel and Range Channel, officials said.

Louis was thrown from the ship and rescuers were initially unable to locate him, authorities said.

However, divers from the Islip Fire Department found Renee in the hull of the submerged boat and brought her to their ship. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

“Unfortunately, the victim could not be helped and was pronounced dead on the spot,” firefighters said.

Her husband’s body was also recovered Monday morning, Suffolk County police said.

According to police, Ferdinand Caravousanos, 61, from West Babylon, who was piloting the other boat, and his passengers were not injured.

Both ships were impounded for security checks.

Police said investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing.
