Verstappen has an eight-point lead over Hamilton in the drivers’ standings but the British driver has won the last two races and is expected to be out for the pace in the penultimate race of the season in Saudi Arabia. this weekend.
The pair collided twice this season, at Silverstone and Monza, before another incident in Brazil, where Verstappen escaped punishment after forcing Hamilton off the track.
Former world champion Hill hopes the battle for the title can be resolved without unnecessary controversy.
“I think it’s sad for F1 [if the title is decided in a crash],” said Hill. “I just feel like we have an obligation to sport, I think.
“It would be great if there was a way to solve the problem, not unfriendly, but certainly to please… I want to go away feeling that this is a great championship, closely contested. by two worthy opponents and the best man in the best team won.
“You don’t want things like that hanging over the final championship.”
Hill was famously knocked out by Michael Schumacher at the 1994 Australian Grand Prix in a collision that forced both drivers to retire from the race, giving the German the first of his seven world titles. .
Hill fears a similar move may not happen during the final two races, in Jeddah and Abu Dhabi, and believes the FIA should make sure there are clear boundaries.
“Assuming Max is in the lead and it comes to the wheel, I would say that for a driver to resist the temptation to be an aggressive defender is extremely high and very difficult to resist. there,” he explained.
“I think the problem is how can sport take steps to prevent a bad ending like this, you know? We’ve had enough championships to be decidedly controversial.
“And I think for all the good work the sport is doing, it’s going to be a little bit canceled when we have an unsatisfactory solution.
“There may be some clear indication before we go into this that they might decide to impose a point penalty if we have a clash that is deemed unfair. And that might be the only way to prevent the same thing from happening.”
