Few have competed under great managers than Tony Woodcock, who won titles and European championships in England before moving to Germany with great success.

Woodcock spent five years under Brian Clough and worked with the likes of Rinus Michels, Udo Lattek and Christian Daum on two occasions for FC Cologne.

And while Rangnick has a reputation for paying attention to the smallest detail, Woodcock argues that the true greats never try to over-complicate football.

“We all know about Clough, and how successful he is,” he said.

“Well, what he always said was that the hardest thing to do was to keep it simple.

“Cloughie would tell us, ‘You only use the skills you have to get out of the most extreme situations or when you have to make quick decisions.

“You talk about Michels, and his Total Football with the Netherlands, and it is the same.

“He knew his team was very talented but he played and moved, played and moved. Simple as that.

“All Cloughie asked us to do is something every player can do.

“Rinus once said that he had 16 international players on his team in Cologne and four strikers.

‘IT IS NOT COMPLETED, SO DON’T DO IT’

“But he doesn’t expect us to score three goals a week. All he wants is for us to be fit, help our teammates and show the right amount of commitment.

“If he gets that from every player, he will say we will never fall below 80 per cent.

“He used to say to people, ‘It’s not good to go to 100% in one week and then drop to 60 in the next three weeks. Do it and we will be defeated’.

“Every coach I have coached knows we can play, but all they expect is to see us do the simple things.

“11v11 football. It’s not complicated, so don’t make it that way.”
