Lambourghini has created an esports team

Lamborghini dipped into the world of esports for the first time in 2020 with The Real Race. Since the success of its virtual racing competition, the company has now plunged headlong into virtual racing with the Automobili Lamborghini Esports team.

Not content with just driving the real world track, Lamborghini is now trying to dominate on the virtual tarmac as well. Start with a strong Italian presence to put the team’s name on the virtual scene.

Starting with a team of three racers, the Italian supercar makers didn’t pull any punches with the pedigree of the drivers they chose. Jordan Sherratt, Gianfranco Giglioli and Giorgio Simonin are the talented crew chosen to fly the Lamborghini colors.

The team has announced that it will come hard out of the gates to win the trophy in the GT World Challenge Esports Sprint Series hosted by SRO. The top title in the simulated racing world.

All three drivers have extensive track records in high-end competition. South African Jordan Sherrat destroyed the competition in The Real Race 2021, Lamborghini’s virtual open access competition, finishing 1st in 9 of his 10 races. This catapulted him straight into the Lamborghini team, a dream the F4 racer has had for a long time.

In an interview with Traxion.gg, Jordan said: “Becoming the official rider is pretty much my goal. That’s what I’ve always worked towards, including in the real world.” The driver even linked his early experience of console gaming to his current success:

“I used to play Gran Turismo on the PlayStation 3 for fun. I had the G27 wheel, which was huge back in 2013 or 2014. I used my old balance bike last year. That’s how I got into sim racing.”

Aside from Sherrat as captain, both Gianfranco Giglio and Giorgio Simonini have the experience of going the distance. Simonini won the Sim Grid World Cup 2020 and finished 4th in the SRO Esports 2020 Championship, making the 22-year-old Italian an exciting choice for both his country and the sports car brand.

Lamborghini uses simulated races as an opportunity to test setups and gear for real-world use.

Putting his name on the map in 2020, Italian-Venezuelan Giglio finished 5th in that year’s Real Race and clinched the title at the Porsche Esports Carrera Cup Italia.

Commenting on the significance of the creation of the new esports team, Lamborghini’s motorsport boss Giorgio Sanna said: “After several decades of development in the industry, simulated racing is getting closer to its real-life counterpart and now has nothing to envy from professional motorsport”. ,
