LA nurse Kathryn Pugh accused of drunk shooting at neighbor’s apartment

A decorated California nurse is behind bars this week after allegedly shooting her handgun “while drunk” at a neighbor’s Sunset Boulevard home on Monday afternoon, authorities said.

Kathryn Pugh, a 39-year-old nurse who received a 2019 DAISY Award at Huntington Health in Arcadia, allegedly had drunk too much and perforated her apartment amid a feud with her downstairs neighbor, police said.

Police say the woman in the apartment below Pugh called 911 around 3:49 p.m. Monday to report the sound of a gunshot and an apparent bullet hole in her ceiling.

Arcadia police officers arrived and reportedly found Pugh “intoxicated and in possession of two handguns”. She had legally registered both guns, police told Fox News Digital, and they said they had had no previously documented interactions with her.

“It appears that both the victim and the suspect have an ongoing dispute over issues related to the home,” police said in a statement.

Police claim they fired a total of three shots through their floor and an outside wall.

“It appears they were fired on purpose,” police told Fox News Digital on Thursday.

Pugh faces two charges of firing a firearm at an occupied home. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Her bail was originally set at $250,000, but a judge ordered she be held without bail at her arraignment this week despite having no criminal record.

Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon’s office, who has defended low or no bail for repeat offenders, said bail was increased due to the court’s concern for public safety.

In March, Gascon’s office revised a policy that bars his assistant district attorney from requesting cash bail, something he wanted to eliminate altogether.

“The district attorney remains firmly committed to the core principles accepted by Los Angeles voters, including goals to eliminate cash bail and maximize pre-trial release as part of public safety,” Gascon’s office told Fox News Digital at the time. “Over the past 18 months we have identified some gaps in our existing pre-trial surveillance system that require slight adjustments in the way we pursue these objectives. For individuals who pose an exceptional risk to public safety, including those who have committed other offenses during pre-trial release, the Bureau may request bail in closely coordinated circumstances.”

The hospital’s DAISY Award recognizes “clinical excellence, caring and compassion.” A spokesman for the institution did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
