There will be no downtime on Netflix for Sons of Anarchy and Mayans, MC creator Kurt Sutter. Three-time Emmy Award nominee and producer signed a deal with the streamer to create a new series, The Abandons, is set in the West and follows the same gritty nature of Sutter’s earlier work, but now in the Old West.
This announcement was made shortly after The streaming giant hired Sutter to launch his feature film under their banner. Netflix was looking for a presenter after he abruptly left FX in 2019, which had been his home for nearly two decades. At the time of his exit, Sutter spoke out about what happened without giving a reason, as he revealed in a letter shared by Deadline:
“I felt Disney’s creative scrutiny from day one. The script notes and cuts are too heavy. Requires a deadly level of story and doesn’t have the limitations on PC like me. never experienced it before. I was really scared for the creative future of storytelling. So I stepped back. Hard.”
Sutter’s new project, The Abandons, which is still in early development and will likely gain traction only after he finishes his movie, titled This beast. He talked to Deadline About The Abandons, and reveals what drew him to the project, as well as his influences:
“I have always been fascinated by the origins of La Cosa Nostra, the way these Sicilian peasant families were more marginalized by barons and aristocrats. These families banded together to protect themselves from these abusive land tycoons, and from there solving those problems on their own, La Cosa Nostra was born and became the authority, the law. and the order of the land. There are other influences. Through the pandemic, I watched replays of Bonanza, and first of all, it completely stays the same. I remember watching it as a kid, but I just remember there was an episode where someone got killed, and Hoss just wanted revenge, and I mean, dark revenge. In the end, it was a televised end to Sunday, but I just realized that the Cartwrights are a bullet away from the outlaw. […] That is the origin of this, with the working title The Abandons. “
Hiring Sutter as a producer and showrunner is another example of Netflix’s strategy to attract big names in the industry like Shonda Rhimes and Ryan Murphy to create top-notch content for years to come. Rhimes has brought Bridgerton, which has since become one of streamers’ biggest hits and Invented Anna, which is slated to premiere in February 2022. Six-time Emmy Award winner Murphy has delivered a number of shows like Politicians, Hollywood, Ratchand movies like prom. With the addition of Sutter to this blocking medium, we can only expect new and impressive content from the showrunners we know and love on the platform in the future.
Netflix has yet to reveal the release date and other related information about The Abandons.
The designer compared watching certain scenes to watching SNL but not in a good way.
