Seattle Kraken forward Jared McCann on Tuesday signed a five-year contract extension worth an average of $5 million per season.

McCann, 25, leads the expansion team in goals (21), points (33), power play goals (seven) and power play points (12). His goal total serves as a career high.

“I believe in this city and I believe in this organization,” McCann said in a video posted to the Kraken’s official Twitter account. “.. We are of course looking forward to the future here and to what we can achieve as a team.”

McCann is the first player in franchise history to re-sign with the Kraken.

“We are thrilled that Jared has made this long-term commitment to the Kraken and the city of Seattle,” said Ron Francis, general manager of Kraken. “Jared has proven this year that he can make a difference offensively and we’re excited to have him as a core part of our organization going forward.”

McCann has 188 points (87 goals, 101 assists) in 403 career games with the Vancouver Canucks, Florida Panthers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Kraken. He was selected by the Canucks with the 24th overall pick of the 2014 NHL Draft.
