Killed Bronx babies hidden in tub full of clothes: police

The bodies of a toddler and a baby, who were found stabbed to death more than half an hour after police responded to a domestic riot in the Bronx on Saturday, had been hidden under piles of clothing in a running bathtub.

The boys, aged 3 years and 11 months, were found by their father in the tub just before 8 p.m. with “multiple stab wounds” to the neck and torso at a homeless shelter at 246 Echo Place in Mount Hope by their father, police said.

At 7:21 p.m., police and emergency services responded to an 911 call, which police and sources say was most likely caused by a carbon monoxide detector in the third-floor apartment.

Police found the boys’ 22-year-old mother naked and “acting irrationally” in the apartment filled with toxic gas after she set things on fire in the kitchen, police and sources said.

Officials turned off the water to the running bathtub and took the unidentified woman to St Barnabas Hospital. According to the police, they did not notice that the killed children were hidden under the pile of clothes in the tub.

“There was nothing obvious to suggest there were dead children there,” a police source said. “There was no blood”

Before she went to the hospital, a family friend told police that the woman’s children were with their father, police said.

The man, who was on the fourth floor of the building when police were first called, made the gruesome discovery about 35 minutes later, and his frantic cries for help prompted neighbors to call 911 a second time at 7:57 p.m., they said Officer .

The boys’ mother was believed to be a person of interest in the horrific double murder, police said. No charges had been brought against her as of Sunday morning.

Francis Pimentel, 30, a Pennsylvania resident who was visiting his mother for Thanksgiving at 245 Echo Place, told police he saw an excited young woman outside the building Saturday night.

“I was waiting for the taxi outside and see this woman coming with me from 246 [her] Hands on the back of the head go straight to the street without looking. She was crazy!” he told the “Post” on Sunday morning.

“She walked and stopped and turned and walked and stopped with both hands on the back of her head! To say, ‘What have I done?!, What have I done?!’ I went up to her and said, ‘Miss, are you alright?’ and she stopped and looked at me her face was mad and then just paced back and forth and stopped[ing] and say, ‘What have I done?!, What have I done?!’” Pimentel recalled.

“I got in a taxi to go to the hairdresser. When I came back all the police were here and they took her to the ambulance. The same woman. She was driving an ambulance. Black woman in her 20s, maybe 30s. I can not believe it. I have two children, my son [is] 4. My [other] Son [is] 10. I get so upset when I hear about what she did.”

Neighbor Shannon Holyfield saw the boys’ father scream and cover the two naked boys in blood. She described the scene as “terrifying and heartbreaking”.

“He was screaming hysterically,” Holyfield said. “He screamed ‘Help me!’ And I came and opened my door and I see him coming down the hall with the two boys in his arms.

“They were dead. They were dead. There was blood everywhere, it covered them,” she continued.

“These are babies. The boys didn’t deserve that.”

Holyfield said the parents of the babies killed fought earlier in the day.

A man who lives on the fourth floor of the complex told the Post he helped the panicked father pull the children out of the tub when he found them, noting that first responders and shelter staff initially went to the stabbed children had “passed by”.

“I tried to give the little baby some air but it was too much,” the neighbor said.

“It’s just sad,” he said. “I said [the father] to put him on the bed. With the eldest I tried to revive him, to give him air, but it didn’t work.”

Other efforts to save the lives of the tiny, unidentified victims were unsuccessful. The coroner is to determine the cause of death, police said.
