‘Kenobi’ Star Hayden Christensen Has ‘Vader Movement Specialist’

Being on the dark side comes at the expense of mobility.

Hayden Christensen, who is set to star as the legendary villain Darth Vader in the upcoming Disney+ series Kenobi, announced Wednesday that he has worked with a special choreographer to perfect the Dark Lord’s style of movement, reports Entertainment Weekly .

“We had this woman who was like a Vader movement specialist,” Christensen said. “And she made sure we were always in the right stadium.”

The 41-year-old Shattered Glass actor, who briefly portrayed the villain in Revenge of the Sith, also revealed that the suit really changed the way he had to walk in his role.

“We wanted to make sure that we were staying true to the way Vader moves and how we perceive him and keeping all of that relatively consistent,” explained Christensen.

Joann Jansen, who worked with Christensen on Kenobi, has been part of several high-profile projects, including James Cameron’s upcoming Avatar: Way of the Water and Remember the Titans.

“It’s challenging,” Christensen told EW, recalling the discomfort of actually donning the black suit for the first time.

“I really had trouble moving in it and it was all extremely rigid. And I told George that [Lucas], and he said, ‘It’s okay. This is your first time in this suit. So it should feel very mechanical and maybe not very natural.’”

Christensen stressed the importance of having someone help him with the movement, since the show is set 10 years after the character was first put in the suit and he’s had plenty of time to get used to it.

Another question that has arisen since the announcement of Vader’s return is: who will cast their vote? At this point, it’s unknown if James Earl Jones – who has provided the voice for Vader since he first appeared on screen in 1977 – will return to do the voiceover.

“Of course we remain true to the voice we all know and love,” Christensen said.
