In her new memoir, Here’s The Deal, out today, Kellyanne Conway recalls how her 15-year-old daughter, Claudia, was thrust into the national spotlight by a New York Times reporter.
Conway, the former special adviser to President Donald Trump, first heard that her daughter had gone “viral” in July 2020 when a reporter from Yahoo! News texted her late that night: “Are you following the… coverage of Claudia’s TikToks?”
She wasn’t, but this text made her look.
Conway was shocked to discover that Taylor Lorenz, then a tech reporter for the New York Times, had compiled all of her daughter’s anti-Trump posts on TikTok and forwarded the entire thread to her hundred thousand followers on Twitter, “every one of them Now go through the daily details of my teenage daughter’s life and any thoughts and feelings that may have been actively running through her mind.”
Claudia’s likes, comments and the number of her followers exploded and made her an overnight sensation. “Obviously, this is every teenage girl’s social media dream, but her parents’ nightmare,” Conway writes.
Her first reaction was utter horror. “Terror for Claudia’s safety. Instant fame brings instant chaos, as I well know.”
She called her husband George, a lawyer and conservative political activist known for his own controversial tweets about Trump. But, she writes, he didn’t care.
“What should I do?” he asked before hanging up, she writes.
“He wouldn’t take another call or take any of my desperate texts.”
When Conway called Claudia, she was with three of her friends on the New Jersey boardwalk and filled with youthful glee. “I’ve finally got my fame!” she announced. “I’m trending! I’m not taking it off!”
Conway ruefully notes that the media spent more time covering her daughter during the Trump administration than Hunter Biden, now 52, did during his father Joe’s run for the presidency. “My teenage daughter became news but not Joe Biden’s adult son.”
In August 2020, Conway announced she was leaving the White House to focus on her family. “We don’t agree on a lot,” she wrote of herself and her husband, “but we agree on what matters most: the kids. Our four children are teenagers and tweens starting a new year of middle and high school, conducted from home for at least a few months. As millions of parents across the country know, home-schooling children require a level of attention and vigilance so unusual as these times are.”
Lorenz’s Twitter thread on Claudia Conway has since been deleted. Claudia Conway now has 1.6 million followers on TikTok.
