Katherine Ryan has joined the chorus of celebrities criticizing Will Smith for slapping him at the Oscars.
In what has been called the “craziest” Oscars moment of all time, Smith took the stage during Sunday night’s (March 27) ceremony to smack host Chris Rock. After returning to his seat, he shouted, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth”.
The moment came after Rock made a joke about Pinkett Smith, referring to her as “GI Jane” in reference to her shaved head. Pinkett Smith has opened up about her diagnosis of alopecia.
After the shocking incident, several stars – including Ryan – condemned the Men in Black star’s behavior.
Ryan opened up a discussion with her social media followers to open up about the incident, with the comedian later sharing screenshots of their conversations to her Instagram stories.
In a screenshot, a fan wrote to Ryan: “I don’t condone what he’s done, violence is never the answer but just because Chris is a ‘comedian’ means Will has to sit and watch his wife be insulted ? Chris shouldn’t have said it, Will shouldn’t have hit him.”
Ryan replied, “Yes he has to sit and watch his wife get insulted, yes that’s the point of the celebrity monologue.”
“Can’t take a joke, stay home,” she added.
Another follower wrote to Ryan, pointing out the politics of Rock’s joke: “I initially felt the same way about Smith (get back in your box dude) but the focus was on the slap itself rather than the humiliation of a black woman with an illness on a world stage is surely not given enough attention?
“The politicization and surveillance of black hair has been rampant for centuries, and is so complex and nuanced – Rock’s snide comment was way below the belt and incredibly damaging.”
The comedian replied to the follower: “Yes I know and maybe you don’t know that CHRIS ROCK MADE A WHOLE DOCUMENTATION GOOD HAIR.”

In 2009, Rock directed a documentary exploring the importance of hair in black culture. Rock interviewed celebrities like Ice-T and Raven Symone and visited hair salons and stylist competitions.
A source close to Rock has claimed that the comedian “had no idea” about Pinket Smith’s alopecia diagnosis.
