Kareem Flake charged with murder of Destini Smothers, body found in Queens trunk

The man who allegedly killed his common law wife and left her body in the trunk of a car in Queens was charged with her murder on Wednesday after being extradited from Florida, police said.
Kareem Flake, 30, was struck by the assassination attempt after the decomposing body of his partner, 26-year-old Destini Smothers, was discovered by Department of Sanitation workers in South Ozone Park in March 2021, authorities said.
Smothers, who shared her two children with Flake, has been missing since November 2020 when she was last seen exiting the Bowlero bowling alley in Woodside following a birthday party.
That night, the couple got into a “heated argument,” according to the missing person’s report filed at the time.
The city coroner’s office determined that Smothers died from blunt force trauma to the head, causing a fractured skull and brain injury.
The NYPD had attempted to arrest Flake, who was in a common law marriage to Smothers, in connection with her murder.

Flake was arrested on April 7 in Kissimmee, Fla. for domestic battery charging against another woman. The outcome of this case was unclear.
He was picked up by NYPD detectives at JFK airport on Wednesday after returning to town, sources said.
