Kambel Smith is an autistic artist with a gift for turning cardboard into works of art

Philly, Pa. – Kambel Smith can make just about anything out of cardboard – from sculpting the Lincoln Memorial to the Woolworth Building to the Chinatown Arch.

He is self-taught, creates constantly and has a stunning attention to detail.

He started with drawings, then painted on canvas, then painted on cardboard when his father could no longer afford the canvases.

His father, Lonnie, says he is the leader of the autismarians.

Autisarian is the family’s way of reframing autism, seeing it not as a disorder but as a gift of superhuman abilities.

“I’m not autistic,” says Kambel, “call me autistic.”
