Justice Department Ends Emmett Separation Investigation Until No Complaints Are Filed

The Justice Department ended its reinvestigation of the 1955 Emmett Till case without filing any new charges, according to officials.

Mr Till, a 14-year-old black boy, was brutally tortured and shot for allegedly whistling and performing sex acts with a white woman named Carolyn Bryant of Money, Mississippi.

His body was later discovered in the Tallahatchie River, and thousands attended the funeral in his hometown of Chicago. His mother insisted the ceremony took place in an open coffin, and the images of Till’s mutilated body shocked the nation and underscored the kind of racist violence African Americans face. in the Jim Crow South.

Authorities reopened the case three years ago when a historian’s new book appeared to contradict key parts of the original record of what happened in the brutal murder.
