Just 10 minutes of jogging can improve mood and brain function

It can be hard to push us to go run in winter – especially when it’s wet and windy outside.

But new research has found that even running super fast can have amazing health benefits.

In fact, it seems like just a 10-minute workout will not only make us feel better, but can also improve brain health.

Now, we all know that Exercise can boost mental and physical health in many ways.

But when it comes to mental health, little research has been done on the specific benefits of running – compared to other physical activities, such as cycling.

So here’s something put to the test in a recent research.

Researchers from the University of Tsukuba in Japan asked participants to run on a treadmill for just 10 minutes at 50% of their maximum effort — so the intensity was moderate.

They then had to take the Color and Word Test – which is used to measure the brain’s processing time reaction time.

The results showed a spike in both self-reported pleasure and arousal and an increase in prefrontal cortex activation.

In other words, the runners were found to have an increase in blood flow in the part of the brain involved in executive functions and mood control.

The researchers then compared these results with a similar study on cycling, which also showed increased cognition – but no improved mood.

Therefore, it seems that many different types of exercise can make us feel differently.

The authors note: ‘Since exercise is a drug, the effects of which vary depending on the drug, different forms of exercise such as running and cycling must be observed to have different effects on mental health and brain functioning.’

So pushing ourselves outside for a jog will actually make us feel better — potentially than other fitness activities.

And these findings suggest that we don’t necessarily need a lot of exercise to feel its benefits.
